“Through Pennies from Heaven we have raised over £56,000 and the annual donation is increasing year on year. It is a simple and efficient fundraising initiative we can offer our corporate partners and a fantastic way for employees to support us. Their pennies have turned into thousands of pounds for Macmillan supporting our work helping people affected by cancer.”

Should we talk to our corporates about Pennies from Heaven?
Yes, Pennies from Heaven is very popular with charities as it enables you to increase donations from larger employers you have strong relationships with. Pennies from Heaven can form part of your fundraising toolkit when talking to corporates about fundraising ideas. Below are some common questions and you can also download a flyer. Please contact us if we can be of any assistance when discussing the idea.
- Should we just aim this at large employers?
We normally recommend Pennies from Heaven to organisations with more than 1000 staff just to ensure that enough pennies are raised to support the cost and time of the scheme. That said we do have a number of employers running the scheme with less than this number (~500) just because they love it!
- What will it cost an employer or a charity?
Pennies from Heaven will agree a modest fee for the license to run the scheme and other services – this can be either an annual direct charge (meaning 100% of donations are distributed to the chosen charities) or a small deduction from donations. The fee will depend on the level of services provided and the number of employees. Some of the services provided by PFH include distribution services, HMRC compliance, gift aid assistance, charity support management, best practice sharing and fundraising consultancy. Employers should contact us to discuss fee options and don’t worry we always try and find a fee that works for everyone.
- The other thing for employers to consider is their payroll system which must be configured to operate the scheme. I am pleased to say that most systems can support the scheme but please do ask us as we can advise.
- Are Pennies from Heaven donations eligible for Gift Aid?
Yes. This means that the charity, after reclaiming gift aid, will receive more than the original donation even when a fee is deducted from donations.
- My corporates already offer staff Payroll Giving, isn’t it the same?
No. Pennies from Heaven is distinct yet complementary to other forms of Payroll Giving and fundraising activities and indeed the majority of employers running Pennies from Heaven also offer Payroll Giving demonstrating this fact. Why? Because employers want to make sure they offer all staff a way to donate through pay. Traditional Payroll Giving schemes provide individuals the choice of how much to give and to which charity and are more popular with people employed in more senior positions and those on higher salaries. Pennies from Heaven donations are less than a pound so appeal to everyone particularly part time or lower paid workers. Just because you earn less does not mean you care less, but you might not be able to afford or commit to the higher recommended regular payments of Payroll Giving schemes.
“We have over 50% of our employees donating the pennies from their salary every month through the Pennies from Heaven scheme. Those that want to donate more or be more specific about where their donation is going, sign up to Payroll Giving.” Debbie Lombard – Director of HR and OD, VocaLink.
- Could our own staff join the scheme?
Yes. Did you know that other UK charities are raising new funds by asking their own staff to donate to their charity via Pennies from Heaven. Mencap raise over £1000 a month from their own staff donating through the scheme.
“Pennies from Heaven is one of the easiest ways for staff to raise vital funds so we can continue to support people with learning disabilities in the UK. Our staff already give us lots of their time above and beyond the call of duty, but they are truly committed and passionate about our work and donating their ‘spare’ payslip pennies is another, great way to contribute to our cause.” Ellie Gray, Director of Fundraising and Development.
