“Through Pennies from Heaven we have raised over £56,000 and the annual donation is increasing year on year. It is a simple and efficient fundraising initiative we can offer our corporate partners and a fantastic way for employees to support us. Their pennies have turned into thousands of pounds for Macmillan supporting our work helping people affected by cancer.”
Pennies from Heaven is very popular with charities as it enables them to increase donations from employers they have strong relationships with. Pennies from Heaven should form part of your fundraising toolkit when talking to corporates about fundraising ideas.
We have put together an overview of the scheme for you which you will find on this page as well as an overview for employers you can use to introduce the idea to your corporate network. Please contact us if we can be of any assistance when discussing the idea.
What will it cost an employer or a charity?
Pennies from Heaven will agree a modest fee for it’s services – this can be either an annual direct charge (meaning 100% of donations are distributed to the chosen charities) or a small deduction from donations. All Pennies from Heaven donations are eligible for gift aid. This means that the charity, after reclaiming gift aid, will receive more than the original donation even when a fee is deducted from donations.
Some of the services provided by PFH include distribution services, HMRC compliance, gift aid assistance, charity support management, best practice sharing and fundraising consultancy.
My corporates already offer staff Payroll Giving, isn’t it the same?
No. Pennies from Heaven is complementary to other forms of Payroll Giving and fundraising activities and most employers running Pennies from Heaven also offer Payroll Giving demonstrating their distinct appeal. Payroll Giving appeals to individuals, mostly higher paid management because they ask for a greater minimum monthly donation (£5-£10) but not everyone can, and wants to commit to this. With donations of just a few pence Pennies from Heaven appeals to everyone regardless of earnings – just because you earn less doesn’t mean you care less. As more of the workforce moves away from full time hours employers want to offer a range of ways to donate through pay to include all employees.
“We have over 50% of our employees donating the pennies from their salary every month through the Pennies from Heaven scheme. Those that want to donate more or be more specific about where their donation is going, sign up to Payroll Giving.” Debbie Lombard – Director of HR and OD, VocaLink.
Could our own staff join the scheme?
Yes. Did you know that other UK charities are raising new funds by asking their own staff to donate to their charity via Pennies from Heaven. Mencap raise over £1000 a month from their own staff donating through the scheme.
“Pennies from Heaven is one of the easiest ways for staff to raise vital funds so we can continue to support people with learning disabilities in the UK. Our staff already give us lots of their time above and beyond the call of duty, but they are truly committed and passionate about our work and donating their ‘spare’ payslip pennies is another, great way to contribute to our cause.” Ellie Gray, Director of Fundraising and Development.
