Purple Pennies is a charitable giving scheme that is open to all staff at The University of Manchester. It’s a fantastic opportunity to donate a few pennies each month to good causes that you care about. And if we all join in, together we can make a big difference.

Purple Pennies allows you to make a collective impact with colleagues across the University by donating the pennies from your salary towards local charitable causes. Your salary will be rounded down to the nearest pound, meaning you will never donate more than 99p a month. If your net pay is £1,200.33 you’d donate the 33p and keep the £1,200. Every single penny will help.

How do your Purple Pennies help?

100% of donations will go to our chosen causes – Helping disadvantaged students, Supporting Manchester’s cancer research and Wood Street Mission.

All three good causes were chosen by you and your colleagues to make sure that they’re the ones closest to your heart.

Helping disadvantaged students: Giving more students their Manchester opportunity.

At Manchester, we believe bright people should have access to a world-class education – regardless of their background or financial circumstances. But across the country, bright people from disadvantaged backgrounds face barriers in going to University. And the rising cost of living is having a stark impact right across our student community. Demand for hardship support has risen more than three times since the start of the pandemic. By supporting Manchester students, you’ll help increase the financial support available to them. You’ll fund scholarships and access programmes, helping talented people join us here. And you’ll make sure more students can access hardship support when they need it most.  By supporting Manchester students today, you’ll give them the opportunity to fulfil their potential tomorrow.

Supporting Manchester’s cancer research: Re-writing the stories of people affected by cancer.

Cancer turns 1,000 people’s lives upside down every day.

Here at The University of Manchester, we’re tackling the disease from all angles – from developing new treatments to finding ways to detect cancer earlier. Our scientists are working hard to eradicate cancer, and we have an opportunity to save millions of lives around the world.  With help from our community of donors and fundraisers, a brand-new cancer centre will be opening soon. Designed to speed up research progress, this will be a world-class centre bringing new hope to people with cancer. Your support will help complete the new building, so our scientists can move in as soon as possible. And, once it’s open, you’ll support the amazing research that takes place there.  Cancer will affect one in two of us – but with your help we can create a happier, healthier future for all.

Wood Street Mission

Wood Street Mission is a children’s charity helping children and families living on a low income in Manchester and Salford. We provide practical help to help meet children’s day-to-day needs and improve their life chances. Through Family Basics we provide struggling families with children’s clothes, bedding and baby equipment, and toys and books which are important for children’s wellbeing and development.

We promote engagement in education by helping families with the costs of going to school through Smart Start (school uniform project) and run Books Roadshows to promote reading and improve children’s literacy. We also provide toys for children to have presents on Christmas Day. We also raise awareness about child poverty through our communications, holding events and giving talks at schools, businesses, and groups. We help thousands of children and their families every year, and all our services are free for families to access on referral.

As an independent charity we rely on our supporters to raise and donate funds and items, and to raise awareness of our work. We have hundreds of volunteers helping us each year, who are essential to our work. Wood Street Mission was established in 1869 making us 154 years old this year.
